Course Overview

This course provides an in-depth review of post-stroke spasticity, classifications of muscle hypertonia, and evidence-based tone management strategies for individuals with chronic upper-extremity impairment. Through required reading along with course video, learners will examine the clinical presentation of spasticity, its impact on active and passive function, and available medical and therapeutic interventions. Emphasis is placed on the integration of skilled OT/PT with medical tone management and interdisciplinary collaboration to optimize functional outcomes and readiness for Paired VNS Therapy.

The online class is intended for medical professionals (e.g. OT/OTA, PT/PTA, Physicians, etc.) directly related to the rehabilitation of a patient or client. To participate in this CEU and receive credit, the participant must be a licensed, treating clinician. Completion of this course will reward the participant with .15 CEUs or 1.5 contact hours, following completion of the presentation and a ≥80% score on the quiz. You will have 90 days to complete this course.

Debbie is an occupational therapist with more than 33 years of clinical experience, specializing in neurorehabilitation across inpatient, outpatient, and intensive home- and community-based settings. She earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1992 and her Master of Business Administration from Rice University in 2004. Debbie is a Saebo-trained clinician and former clinical educator and currently practices in the outpatient neuro setting.

Ryan Hafner

MD, FAAPMR

Dr. Hafner is a board-certified Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation physician based in Sarasota, Florida. He completed his medical degree at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, followed by training at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Temple University Hospital/MossRehab, and a fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Hafner specializes in neurological and musculoskeletal rehabilitation, with advanced expertise in interventional spasticity management. Dr. Hafner regularly assesses patients for Vivistim VNS Paired Therapy candidacy and helps optimize outcomes by managing spasticity to improve eligibility. Dr. Hafner practices with First Physicians Group at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, providing individualized, function-focused care.
